They are everywhere. They walk the earth almost as if they had always been. Their gates perfectly in time with the common populous as they have ceased to become mere tourists in today's society, but rather a part of it. Their faces perhaps a little more flawless than others, all baring the trademark beauty that media and Photoshop could only hope to impersonate. They are in so many words a microcosm of a perfect society, one without violence or hate crimes, discrimination or rape. They are a household revolution, they are our maids, our caregivers, our cooks, our secretaries, our slaves, and in rare cases...our lovers.

Days like this were all too common. Days where Alex, despite his typically reasonable workload, found himself listlessly scrolling through vapid online social media. Facebook, for example, stared back at his perpetually bored countenance for what seemed like hours at a time, when in all actuality only minutes would've passed.
Efficiency was his downfall. Alex always did things quickly and effectively. Which made him effectively free after work. Which, in turn, meant boredom— which meant time to think about all the things wrong with his life. If at all possible, he thought, he'd very much like to avoid all that— for health reasons, of course.
He took a deep breath. Someone posted one of those godawful reaction picture jokes on his timeline, apparently without the knowledge that Alex liked neither cats nor memes. After taking one good look at the image, he scooted away from his desk, slowly closing his laptop. Yeah. He'd seen one too many grumpy cats today. After all these advancements n technology (hell, they had robots for christ's sake—) apparently people still couldn't forget social media and memes. Clearly this abomination to the eyes meant god wanted him to get the hell off of the internet and get out of the house. But the question remained: get out and do what?
Alex hoped by the time he put on his shoes and jacket he'd come up with some semblance of a plan. Within moments he found himself walking aimlessly outside his apartment, hands tucked in his coat pockets. One anxiously fiddling with his loose change, the other tapping against the interior with impatience. For now, he settled on doing a few errands: buy coffee, a few packages of instant miso soup, and another fleece blanket to replace the one he shouldn't have lent to Alan. This wouldn't occupy the rest of his day, but at the very least it was something.
As he made his way to the nearest grocery store, he passed by digitalized ads blaring their scripts into the crowds— humanoid robots were all the rage now, and with cutting edge technology advancing daily, it was getting easier and easier for even a modest mid-class income to afford a personal service automaton. Alex himself was far more old school— there was something unnerving about their eyes. They were programmed to seem as realistic as possible, but even so he felt their soulless gaze pierce his own with a lifelessness to rival most creepy horror film dolls. He was perfectly fine with his quiet, unchanging life.
Of course, that didn't exactly mean fate thought the same way.

A little girl skipped childishly along the sidewalk. Such is the gift of innocence, to be so free, large eyes full of wonder and curiosity. Her little hand held onto the long, slender finger belonging to her caregiver. A fair-skinned, beautiful young women, with a red smile plastered onto her cherubic face. Her eyes were soft though strangely empty as she regarded her little charge in front of her.
"Hey Hieti, why doesn't that man over there have a special friend like everyone else huh?" The child questioned, bemusement evident on her small face as she pointed a short, little finger at Alex. Hieti, the android caregiver gave a brief glance over in the direction her charge was pointing to. With a simple smile she replied: "Some people just prefer not to go with the trends I suppose." The little girl looked puzzled for a moment then opened her mouth to speak. "Why not? I love you Hieti, you're my best friend!" The girl proclaimed. The android bent down and scooped up the child, her heels clicking softly as she went. Androids have become so assimilated to society that they have now earned a role as caregiver, or a nanny for children. There was some speculation however about it really being a positive thing. People are now encouraged to be more neglectful of their obligations as parents, or at least that is what the AASG (Anti Android Socialist Group) claimed. To quote: "Negating parental responsibilities leads to unhealthy, confused, and unproductive children."

And there it was with the anti-propaganda once again. Alex didn't particularly care for what the public was doing— he, being mostly solitary, pretty much only kept up with the latest information via news or workplace gossip. It mattered to him very little— and it was obvious by now that androids were here to stay. But of course the AASG would have none of it— using every bad android incident as another reason why they ought to be banned altogether. Alex deemed it a pointless and annoying endeavor, even if a few of their arguments did seem valid. It couldn't be helped though. Humans were, after all, intrinsically flawed. Regardless of how perfect the robots were, there were always going to be humans there to fuck something up. And so life went. Strictly par for the course.
As he neared the supermarket, Alex noticed a little girl pointing at him. He squinted a little, pretending not to notice but listened keenly— was she talking about him? Rude. Apparently her android companion failed to teach her any proper manners— though the robot couldn't possibly be blamed for a parental oversight like that. And as lifelike as the android seemed, Alex couldn't shake the thought: this wasn't a real human. No algorithm could mimic the endless complexity of a human brain— nor the illogicality of a human heart. He recalled Alan talking about purchasing one in the near future— with his limitless supply of money pouring in from his absentee parents, it seemed like it'd only be a matter of time before his coworker would finally join the trend too. But Alex shook his head, walked through the market's sliding doors, and took a deep breath.
Time to do some shopping.

"It's broken." A man grunted into his mobile phone irritably as he exited his small flat, toting what seemed to be a large duffle bag behind him.
"Seems like a real waste though." The man added under his breath. He held the phone slightly away from his ear as he appeared to be receiving static from a more than peeved superior on the other end.
"Yeah, yeah, the data chip was erased, the thing's useless now." The man said in an attempt to assuage his ruffled counterpart on the other line. Opening the bag, a smallish form fell out of it and onto the dingy floor of the alley way. The slender frame was limp, pale soft skin flush against the ground.
The man ended his conversation with his boss and pocketed his mobile. He eyed the fragile death beneath him, but in reality the being wasn't at all human, however graceful or beautiful it appeared. In the end it was merely damaged goods.
"They don't pay me enough to reprogram these damn things. Their firewalls are nearly impenetrable. I had no choice but to scrap him." The man sighed as he continued to stare at the naked body before him.
Deciding not to linger any further, the man turned on his heel and exited the alley way, leaving the prone body behind as an offering to the elements.

It didn't take long for him to gather his groceries. After all, the list had been short in the first place. And it was merely a time wasting opportunity after all. He stepped back out of the supermarket, goods in tow, and—
Okay. That certainly did just happen. Out of the corner of his eye, Alex spotted something very human collapse against the ground of an alley not too far from him— it looked so real that he couldn't help but inhale sharply, afraid he was witnessing a murder take place— but to do that in broad daylight meant only one thing; that was no human at all. It must've been an android. It wasn't uncommon to see the lifeless chassis of automatons strewn in dumpsters or junkyards these days— and that, to Alex, was a little disturbing. Broken bodies with wiring instead of nervous systems, sparks sprouting from their ends like the last signs of life sputtering from an engine. It was depressing— and that was another reason why he didn't want an android. It'd be too hard to discard.
And so Alex found himself walking towards the figure, looking this way and that way to make sure no one was looking. From a brief inspection, it seemed to be a very expensive model— one that he could probably never afford himself. It seemed awfully sad just laying there— surely it wouldn't hurt to at least relocate it? Perhaps to some place better— somewhere secluded, away from wandering eyes, where the android couldn't be sullied, abused, or otherwise mistreated by humans further. It would ease his conscience at the very least.
So Alex gently moved the android onto his back for proper relocation, and covered it with his coat. He'd take the back alleys so as to not arouse suspicion.

The peaceful-looking entity merely lolled his head slightly from being jostled, his dead-weight was likely quite heavy for the unfortunate soul who was sentimental enough to rescue the abused android. It wasn't uncommon for androids to be discarded, tossed aside next to the recycle bin, however this one wasn't designed to be discarded at all. The truth was, the android's value hadn't plummeted due to its inability to preform, but rather because it preformed too well. It was a threat to some very bad people, it had secrets locked away deep within it's manufactured cerebellum. The android's sensory receptors had been activated from touch. His thermal sensors picking up on another life form near by. His eyes fluttered open slightly for only a split second before closing again.

First, however, he decided he'd at least drop his groceries off.
Alex made his way back to his apartment, reaching his door and gently fumbling with his keys— dropping them as well his bag of instant coffee. Had it been the cheap kind in plastic containers, this wouldn't've been so hard. But no, Alex had to get the good stuff— neatly packaged in durable, glass jars, hermetically sealed to maintain the rich, bitter scent of his favorite morning cup of joe. Which meant the jar was rather, well, hard. Which meant that it hurt a hell of a lot more when it landed right on his foot.
Ow.
He jerked suddenly, accidentally dropping the android, then spun around to pick it back up in a slight panic— dammit, he was being clumsy again. Dropping things left and right. Oh, and there were his keys on the floor—
Alex stopped to assess his situation. He put the android back down (gently this time) then reached for his keys, sliding it into the lock and turning the knob. Right. One thing at a time. Once inside, he lowered the android down to his couch, sighing in relief. Good lord, that thing was as heavy as a real, actual human. He briefly wondered if engineers actually thought about that stuff— making androids even weigh as much as a real person. Seemed pretty real to him, at least.
With that, he picked up his bag of groceries and began putting away his items, making sure to keep his pantry meticulously organized. Afterwards, he'd google a few choice areas to drop off the automaton, then he'd be on his way.

((May I add a minor character just for plot development's sake? Say he's a friend of Alex's or something? Would that be okay with you or not so much?))
